How this started
XactBudget started the way a lot of good ideas do, on a quiet evening sitting in a recliner.
I learned the hard way how important a budget was in the early days of being a contractor. No budget, no control, no profit.
The budget was built, used, and shared for years. One thing became an obstacle for new folks using it: copying and pasting all the data from the Xactimate Summary report into the spreadsheet. So I built a system to do it for me. Drop in the summary report PDF, and out comes a ready-to-use job budget in just a few minutes. No re-keying, no missed lines, no spreadsheet gymnastics.
I've been running jobs with this budget, and training others to use it, for years. Teams have performed thousands of jobs, both insurance-related and retail, and have consistently hit our desired margins with real confidence in the field.
That's the point of the story. This isn't a prototype. It's the actual system I've used and taught for years, now packaged so any contractor can use it. Built by a restoration contractor, for restoration contractors.

Budgets before the work starts
A budget isn't something you figure out after the job is done. It's the first thing you build — before a single board gets pulled.
Know your real margin
Contractors deserve to see their actual numbers, not guess at them. Labor, material, equipment, overhead, profit — all of it, laid out plain.
Software should save time in the field
If a tool adds steps instead of cutting them, it's the wrong tool. The field is busy enough without fighting a spreadsheet.
